Series Review: Love Death + Robots (2021)

If you’re hearing (well, reading but you get the idea) the name of this show for the first time, are you okay? I mean if the title doesn’t appeal to you I don’t know what else will because ‘love’, ‘death’ AND ‘robots’ it’s all the best stuff under one umbrella. To provide you with some much required data; this show is a compilation of short animated episodes which range from awesome, hilarious, even disturbing at times but above all, jaw dropping amazing. More often than not the episodes will leave you staring at the screen at your own open-mouthed reflection, and each episode sports a different genre: science-fiction, fantasy, comedy and even horror. And the episodes are so short and intriguing that finishing one would motivate you to start another, and before you know it you’ve completed the whole season (even both) and your thoughts need a lot of processing because ‘holy moly… that was SPECTACULAR’. And pulling my last straw here, the show is created by none other than Tim Miller and along with him the executive producer of the show is … wait for it … DAVID FINCHER! (I love his movies, don’t mind me)

So I’ve basically splayed out all of my cards here and this HAS to encourage you to watch the show if it doesn’t… then I’m probably not doing this right. The show began in 2019 and there are two seasons with a total of 26 episodes (18+8) and the episode time limit ranges from 6 to 18 minutes, which makes it perfectly binge-worthy. Focusing on other stuff, all episodes provide a creative theme and plot and they’re all created by different animation studios so the variety of animation is greatly endearing. Some episodes have animation that is so precise that it wouldn’t even look as animation at first glance, there’s an episode with anime themed animation, one that looks like a water-color painting and so on. The soundtrack is so apt for each of the episodes that the perfection of it hurts, it’s a bit dramatic of me but come on. The best part is that since it is an anthology series, you can skip and only watch those episodes that you’d like to, and for you to get an idea of all the episodes that you definitely should not miss I’d like to help out you all.

1. ‘Alternating Histories’ (Ep. 15, season 1)

This episode is the epitome of creative hilarity. If there was a software that would allow you to explore alternate possibilities of how history turned out if you could change one thing, for instance if Hitler died in a street brawl or by being encased in a mass of gelatin OR, by space-time paradox due to encounter with his future self and so on.

2. ‘Three Robots’ (Ep. 1, season 1)

The first episode of the series and a contributing factor in making you fall in love with the show instantly. Three robots explore earth, post-apocalypse when the humanity has seemed to be wiped off and they try to guess various things that humans did, and obviously getting everything wrong. You don’t see the final twist but it goes with a bang.

3. ‘When the yogurt took over’ (Ep. 5, season 1)

The yogurt took over… what? Well, funny you should ask but the world of course. The shortest episode and the least context you have of it, the best.

All of the mentioned episodes are majorly the ‘funny’ portion of the show but I’m pretty sure that if you go through these, you’ll definitely want to go through the others. And since I hate to be partial (it’s debatable) so if you’re looking towards testing some other themes: fantasy (‘Good hunting’ Ep. 8 season 1), supernatural (‘Tall grass’ Ep. 5 season 2), and sci-fi (‘Helping hand’ Ep.14 season 1). And as a final statement, (because ‘warning’ sounds intense) that the title of the show also has the ‘death’ part so some of them can be grotesque or just unnerving but overall, the show is deeply enjoyable.
