I’m sure you all must be thinking how obsessed we are with Marvel by now *giggling* but can you really even blame us?
2021 appears to be the year Marvel decided to go hell bent on making up for its lack of content the previous year due to the obvious reasons that fall under the category of a worldwide epidemic. Four TV series (three live action + one animated) and four pompous theatre releases (two down, two more to go) throughout this year have been a treat for all the fans out there. After the reality-bending experience of ‘WandaVision’ in January and the whole bunch of character development in March with ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’, June was just in time for everyone to have a meet and greet with our favorite anti-hero, Loki, as it was finally the time for the beloved character to get an adventure of his own.
A Loki solo movie has been a head cannon and basically a fairy tale’s wish since a very long time, but it appears that dreams do manage to come true after all. Marvel Studios had begun developing a variety of limited series for Disney+ in 2018 and by November an original series centered on Loki was confirmed featuring Tom Hiddleston, by February 2020 the filming had begun, which had to be halted momentarily because of you-know-what. It was picked up back in September and finally finished in December. The one-episode-a-week series started streaming on Disney+ from July 9 and concluded with a stellar finale on July 14 ‘2021 receiving high praise from audience and critics alike. Joining Tom Hiddleston, the cast consists of: Sophia Di Martino (Sylvie), Owen Wilson (Agent Mobius), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Ravonna), Wunmi Mosaku (Hunter B-15) and Jonathan Majors (Kang the Conqueror).
The show picks off from the events of Avengers Endgame when Loki manages to slip away with the Tesseract and is then intercepted by the ‘Time Variance Authority’ better known as the TVA for committing a crime against the sacred timeline. This in nutshell means that TVA is responsible for curbing those people who are responsible for messing with the flow of time and with the way Loki escaped, he did just that. The escape created an unwanted branching in the steady flow of time which is why he has been bought under as a ‘variant’ but instead of elimination he is taken upon to help with a ‘variant’ creating havoc in the sacred timeline. It’s difficult to give more premise of the plot without giving things away but the plot twists are guaranteed to keep anyone hooked.
Like WandaVision the show begins to explore a completely unique theme from the beginning, something that appears to be different from the existing MCU movies. This might include mind-bending twists, the on-point ominous soundtrack and the VISUALS! … I could just go on and on about the visuals *stares off into distance with awe*. Whether it was a trip to planets colliding with their moons or a fight with the monster at the end of everything, the stunning visuals are bound to blow away your mind like a piñata on a 10 year olds birthday party. I mean take at it look yourself:
But it’s simply not limited to the flashy and showy stuff that accounts for the remarkable success of the show; the credit, most prominently, extends to stellar performance by the cast members. We’ve been seeing Tom Hiddleston as Loki since the first Thor movie (2011), and since then Loki is a character who is deeply loved even despite the steady streak of fake-deaths (one very real *shudder*), betrayals, city-thrashing, and so on. But this was the first time that we were able to see him in a new light, as a separate person who is not shadowed by his brother and planetary tragedies and the singularity that Tom Hiddleston brings to this character is mind blowing. Along with that, Sophia Di Martino bought Sylvie’s character to life with great success and was well appreciated by fans.
After ending the season on a momentous cliffhanger, season two was announced in the post-credit scenes of the final episode and although it might take a couple of years for the second season to see the light of the day, we couldn’t be more eager.
